In math this year we used a program called Connected Math 2. At the beginning of the year I was not comfortable with my math skills. As we went through out the books I got more and more comfortable with my math skills. We have gone through 6 out of 8 books. During these units I have learned so many new things. We went from fractions to percentages and now we are on probability. In the units we had investigations which go from investigation 1 through 4 usually. In the investigations we have homework every night. We have from three to twenty five problems a night. We have homework every day because our Principal requires it. He requires it because we are in the Pre-Algebra math class.

After we are finished with the investigation we move on to the reflection. Each investigation has a reflection. The reflections go over all the things you learned in the investigation by asking questions about it. We have to do the reflection for homework and in the reflection we need the questions answered in depth. After we get our grades we put the grades in the assessment section in our notebooks. Our notebooks have four different sections class work, homework, assessments, and reference. In our class work we put all the problems we did in class in that section. In the homework section we put all our homework in it. As you can see this year we have done so many things in math class.

In each unit, we get graded on our notebooks. Mrs. Mannon looks if our notebooks are neat and if they have everything in them that they need. We also get graded on our vocabulary notebook, they look for all the vocabulary words that are in our connected math books. We hand in our notebooks the day after we have the test on the book. The tests go over all the major points that we need to know. The tests also go through all the skills that we learned how to do in that book.

In each section there are focus questions. They show you ideas about the unit you’re about to learn about. For example in Bits and Pieces 1 there are three focus questions. This is an example: Bryce and Rachel are collecting food for the local food bank. Bryce’s goal is to collect 32 items. Rachel’s goal is to collect 24 items. Suppose Rachel and Bryce each meet their goal. What fraction of Bryce’s goal does Rachel collect? Here is another example: Sarah and her uncle, Takota, go fishing in the Grand River. Each person catches one fish. Sarah’s fish is 5/8 of a foot long. Takota’s fish is 2/3 of a foot long. Which fish is longer? As you can see in our books there are focus questions that will give us an idea of what the book is going to be about.

My favorite unit was Bits and Pieces 1. I liked this unit because we got to learn about fractions and in the beginning of the year I did not really have very good fraction skills. In Bits and Pieces 1 I learned that when you add and subtract fractions you have to have the same denominator. Oranges to Oranges no orpples, that is Mrs. Mannon’s famous saying in our math class about adding and subtracting fractions. I have also learned that when you see the word “of” in word problem it is implying to use the operation multiplication. One more thing that I learned was that when you are multiplying fractions you do not need the same denominator. During the unit I have also learned that fractions can be turned into decimals and then from decimals to percentages. As you can see there is many reasons why I enjoyed that section a lot.
